Repetitive Readings

What book could you read over and over again?

I cannot resist buying a book; moreover, I cannot resist the allure of buying a traditionally bound book. One found in the depths of a dusty book hole, upon a long since forgotten side street in the heart of London. Oh the smell, the feel, the words! In all honesty, I buy too many of them – more than I can warrant actually reading.

Of all these books decorating my shelves, encumbering my desk, and in some cases – supporting it from beneath (yes I’m a heathen – I know), the ones I find I come back to and read time and time again are the shorter, collective works.

The likes of Gaiman’s Norse Mythology, Poe’s collective stories & poems and even Stine’s Fear Street, all find their way back into my palms time and time again; my thumb caressing the breast of their soft pages edge, dulled by dozens of not hundreds of prior reads.

Now that does not meant I do not read and reread longer works. Some of Child’s Jack Reacher series have certainly darted joyfully across the screen of my kindle a few times whilst Beukes The Shining Girls returns to me, longing of a second thorough read.

If you haven’t noticed a pattern I’m my vague detail, it’s the stories with mystery or meaning I find myself drawn to time and time again.
